After visiting India for an extended stay in 2017, Hewlett returned fascinated by the intense proliferation of imagery of Hindu Gods everywhere. From market stalls to tiny street corner shrines to epic temples, these Gods offer great life lessons and seem to have a constant presence in every facet of life. Hewlett began to respond to the Gods, who he thought were probably the coolest looking deities anywhere, and Kali was the first in an as-yet unrealised ambition to depict them all.
