Boasting an F emblem on her chest, this character’s name is Filament Rouge. Inspired by a 1960s French comic book called Fantômette, this warrior is part of an unrealised project which portrayed a group of French misfit superheroes. When quizzed Hewlett couldn’t remember what, if any, powers they had. As is typical, the artist was drawn to the underbelly of society and imagined a world where people taken from the margins of society – or as he puts it, the gutter – rise up. This particular ‘warrior’ possesses a different visual language to the rest in this collection, she emerges from nothingness, a blurry apparition from the shadows. Between two worlds her striking red hair and cape slowly emerge.
